POEM from Devin of the 23rd Ill (AS I STOOD)

Ok, i worte one inspired by the saturday battle at Mahaffie. The rhyme is not perfect and it doesnt have the greatest flow, but I gave it a try, I think you may find it fairly decent.
Enjoy.

On That Day
Devin Wielar
As I stood true
In the long ranks of blue
And the banner, glittering green, o’er head
I think of days of old
The one, to me, my father told
Of the battles in old Erin long ago

Of the brave Celtic men
Who no men do shun
Fought for freedom and their homes
And then I stood there
With others who answered the call
Many of whom would courageously fall

We were heard near and far
By the few and all
They had hear our call, “FAJ AN BEALAC”
And the rebels felt the shock
Of our musket shots
Then an ancient frenzy kicked up in us all

And the piped, they had piped
And the beautiful green flag waved
The rebels could hear Tommy Moore
“The minstrel boy has gone to war”
Chased the cowards off the field
Because Erin’s boys refused to yield

The men, they sang a beautiful tune
The piper’s bagpipes kept up too
But the field was unbare, filled with grey and blue
And I knelt down and cried
For the brave men who had died
Their names we’ll ne’er forget

But even so, it goes to show
That Ireland wont yield
The brave rebs they tried, but they all fought and died
And on that day, we pushed them all away
Like a brave and a furious tide.

DAY TRIP TO JEFFERSON CITY and COLE CAMP

Boys,

Margaret and I took advantage of the wonderful weather today and went over to BINDER PARK in Jefferson City to take a look at the event site for next week. Then we went down to Cole Camp to do the same for the event in June. Then went to see a good friend from by child and early adulthood in Warsaw, Mo.

Jefferson City Event Sponsor Web page:
http://collins-battery.org/jcmainindex.html

When you access the event web page and go to the driving instructions be advised that it is easy to drive by the left turn onto Binder Lake Drive (RD) from US Business 50. I am sure there will be signage up giving you directions. to regisration.

If you have GPS in your vehicle here are the coord's for Binder Lake, which is near the Campground, and the Pavilion.

N 38.35.363
W 092.18.270

We arrived in Cole Camp just in time for the town's annual MayFest festivities occuring in mid afternnoon.. If this was any indication of what is in store for us and the towns hospitality, we are going to have a great time!! I spoke to several business owners and they all are looking forward to the 7th and 30th coming to the Civil War Weekend in June. Oh, by the way, the BEER GARDEN was in full swing today. We dined on sauage, german beer, kraut and schnitzel (sp) this afternoon.

Be sure to clear your calendars for the event in Cole Camp this June, it's going to be a blast boys! Don't forget your cameras, you'll fall in love with this GERMAN TOWN.

Your wives should come down and shop in the town and have lunch in one of the many German restaurants. Boys, it's an easy day trip from the Kansas City area via I-70 or Hiway 50, or Hiway 7 from the south. to US 65. Margaret and I left KC at 9:30 a.m. and arrived home at 8:00 p.m.

Don't forget to sign up for what you want to bring from the food list for this coming weekend in Jefferson City.

Let's have a planning meeting before the game on this Saturday nite during the meal, to iron out the details for the Vans. If you can't come to the game or the meal, please send me email if you want to be included in the VAN.

As usual, Margaret and I will provide the chicken wings, hotdogs, and hamburgers for the BBQ. We need potatoe salad, beans, chips, deviled eges etc for the eats, and ice for the sodas and beer.... . Bring a folding chair.

The game begins at 7:00 p.m. with the BBQ dinner at 6:00 p.m. Please call me if you are going to attend so I will know how much meat and chicken to purchase.

Dinner will be served buffet style beginning at 6:00 p.m. Van planning session during the meal before the game.

I am sending this communication to the 23rd Ill as well and to all MIB's via email. You might receive this info from me two times. It is also published on my blog and on the yahoo group site I mentioned yesterday. That site has a "CHAT" feature we might use at a later date. To join this group follow this link:
