Lincoln's Legacy Programs and Update

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Last evenings presentation, Lincoln and Leadership, the first in a series of four entitled Lincoln's Legacy, sponsored by the Kaufman Foundation, was attended by nearly 200 individuals in the Helzberg Room of the Central Library at 14 W. 10th Street, Kansas City, Missouri.

Wine and appetizers were provided before the Panel discussion at no charge to those who called and registered before the meeting.

Free secured and covered parking was provided as well at no charge. The dress was business casual, but all manner of dress was represented.

The program lasted approximately one hour. A question and answer period followed.

Three MIB members attended, Nurse Rita, Cpl. Sample and myself.

The Central Library will host sessions two and three of the series next week Session two will deal with The Rail Splitter and the Railroads on Wednesday, February 11, at 6:30 p.m. This should prove to be interesting since Lincoln was a railroad lawyer.

Session three will follow the next evening. it will deal with Lincoln and the Homestead Act.

Plan to attend these interesting free programs. Call 816-701-3407 to register for the receptions that precede each program.

The battle: a Confederate cavalry force of well over 2,000 attacked gunboats and transports of a combined force of U.S. Army and U.S. Navy……

1. What general literally lost his head in this battle?

2. What device, now standard in a certain type of modern warship, was used in warfare for the first time in this battle?

3. The commander of the ship which fired the shot which decapitated the general in question #1 had previously lost three ships under his command. Name the three lost ships. See Correction in post below.

4. The nephew of the commander in #3 was known for another “first”. Name the nephew and the “first” for which he is credited.

5. The battle was one of several during the campaign. In the overall campaign, how many of the U.S. Navy flotilla (ships/boats) were gunboats?

Answers are due by 6pm (eastern) on Friday, February 6. Good Luck

Correction

An astute player has alerted me to a problem in question number 3.

The commander of the ship which fired the shot was commander of two of the three ships that were lost, but he was a gunnery officer, not commander, of one of them.

So the question 3 should read:

The commander of the ship which fired the shot which decapitated the general in question #1 had been an officer aboard three ships lost previously during the war, two of them as commander. Name the three lost ships.

Hints:
RED _________ ____________ and add an "L" to my last name.

1. Think Irish Color
2. It's on the Sgt. Pepper’s album cover.
3. They all begin with the same letter. Think Eqypt, wagon and ____________ Gap.
4. A Wright brother was hurt also.
5. Think amendment to the Constitution
