The battle: a Confederate cavalry force of well over 2,000 attacked gunboats and transports of a combined force of U.S. Army and U.S. Navy……
1. What general literally lost his head in this battle?
2. What device, now standard in a certain type of modern warship, was used in warfare for the first time in this battle?
3. The commander of the ship which fired the shot which decapitated the general in question #1 had previously lost three ships under his command. Name the three lost ships. See Correction in post below.
4. The nephew of the commander in #3 was known for another “first”. Name the nephew and the “first” for which he is credited.
5. The battle was one of several during the campaign. In the overall campaign, how many of the U.S. Navy flotilla (ships/boats) were gunboats?

Correction
An astute player has alerted me to a problem in question number 3.
The commander of the ship which fired the shot was commander of two of the three ships that were lost, but he was a gunnery officer, not commander, of one of them.
So the question 3 should read:
The commander of the ship which fired the shot which decapitated the general in question #1 had been an officer aboard three ships lost previously during the war, two of them as commander. Name the three lost ships.
