I left Kansas City in a snow storm. The plane from Milwaukee was late arriving in Kansas City. The plane departed Kansas City at 12:45 p.m and flew to Milwaukee. After landing I had to hoof it to the other end of the terminal to catch the connecting flight to Nashville. Midwest Airlines held the plane for three of us for over 30 minutes. We had to go on to the tar-mack and go up one of the old style stair ramps to enter the plane.
I arrived in Nashville at 5:00 P.M. The baggage claim area was nearly 3/4's of a mile walk from the gate. I collected my bag, called the motel and then went to find the ground transportation area so I could pick-up the shuttle to the Holiday Inn Crossroads.
I checked in, took a deep breath, and then went back to the lobby to have a bite to eat in the restaurant/bar. (Three chocolate chip cookies a can of ginger ale and some pretzels didn't fill me up).
I had a great meal with several of my fellow reenactors. I supped with Don Kessler, late of the Frontier Brigade, some great guys from the 10th and 19th Alabama (they were at Franklin TN), the Quarter Master, Provost, Commander of the Topographical Engineers and Trevor Steinback, all 1st Federal Staff members. I believe the General was at the table as well but I couldn't be sure.
Saturday morning I had breakfast with several of the Calvary Commanders, Major Steinback and Mr. Kessler. During the morning session I saw a wonderful PowerPoint on the Typographical Engineers Company. I had to leave when the new rules for joining the 1st Federal Division were brought to the table.
During lunch everyone ate at Wendy's.
At 1:00 p.m. The 1st Federal Division and the Army of Tennessee began the General Session. It lasted until 7:30 p.m. Only a few topics were discussed.
1. New rules for joining and maintaining membership in the First Federal Division
2. An overview of Stands of Colors and the Gettysburg Event.
3. A presentation of an event at Chipamugwa.
4. A need to raised funds for administrative needs of the Division were discussed.
5. The factorization of the 1st.Federal Division.
Much discussion was held on the new rules for joining and maintaining membership in the Division. These new rules will impact our joining and other units maintaining membership in the Division. Point five has a direct bearing, on point one.
Problems with Gettysburg registration were fully discussed.
Dinner was held at the Outback Steakhouse. Stories of reenactments were shared and much laughter was heard.
After breakfast on Sunday an 8:00 a.m. a Staff meeting was held as an observer I was not privileged to attend this meeting. I left for the airport at 9:30 a.m. with Major Steinbach. I arrived back in Kansas City at 7:30 p.m.
An invitation has been extended to me become one of Major Steinbach's Surgeons. I would then be attached to the 7th Missouri, but maintaining my membership in the MIB. I will discuss opportunity this with Col. Crofutt.
Men, we need to have 30 men turnout, under arms, for the STANDS OF COLORS reenactment this May. That is the magic number of men, under arms, that a unit now needs to be able to participation for membership in the 1st. Federal Division. This doesn't mean 30 men on paper, but 30 men actually at an NSA Event such as Stand of Colors, under arms, to be considered for membership or to maintain membership if already a member of the Division.
Other details will be forthcoming and a list of other requirements, that we can meet, such as safety, authenticity etc.. will be sent to units requesting membership in the 1st. Federal Division as a Battalion.
The next North South Alliance Meeting will be held in Nashville, Tennessee next January at the same motel. Plan to attend. it's worth the time, effort and expense to do so.
Personnel note: We, as a unit, must go play with the boys from the 10th and 19th Alabama. They are a bunch of good old boys that we could really have fun with.
Those of you who went to the Battle of Franklin, fought across the line from these boys.
